Newsletter - Volume 27, Number 2, July 2010CONTENTSIN THIS ISSUE Dear members When I edit our second newsletter this year, we have more then 35 degrees in Sweden and especially on the island Öland in the Baltic Sea famous for its Mediterranean climate, high insect biodiversity and huge amounts of migrating birds, we have had sunny weather and no rain for at least five weeks now. So at least I am, from my North European perspective, well prepared for the warm welcome we can expect at the conference in Tours 31st of July -4th of August. It will be a huge conference and we can all look very much forward to the scientific and social events. The only problem will be to choose which lectures and social activities to attend; the organizing committee has done a great job creating an exciting program. New Vice president and Councilors Paulo Zarbin has been elected as our new vice president.
Four new Councilors have been elected after a nearly equal vote among the five candidates. They represent the worldwide research in chemical ecology: Kenya, Sweden, Chile and Japan.
Congratulations! We wish you good luck in your future engagements in the Society. We hope for strong influence from the four continents. We also thank the Past President Gary Blomquist and the retained councilors; Jörg Bohlmann, Angel Guerrero, Aijun Zhang and Caroline Müller for their contributions during the past three years. This website contains his past research on Colorado potato beetle and aphid olfaction as well as unpublished materials. Dr. Paulo H. G. Zarbin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, since 1998, and served as chairman of the graduate committee in chemistry in 2002-2004. Paulo obtained his Ph.D. at the Federal University of São Carlos in 1998, with part of his thesis research being conducted at the National Institute of Sericultural and Entomological Science, Tsukuba, Japan, in 1996-1997. He served as an ISCE councilor in 2007-2009, and is currently a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Chemical Ecology. He is an assiduous attendee of ISCE meetings, as well as meetings of the Asian-Pacific Association of Chemical Ecology. He was the initiator and organizer of the 1st Brazilian Meeting on Chemical Ecology in 1999, which is now in its 6th edition. Paulo is one of the founders of the recently created Latin American Association of Chemical Ecology (ALAEQ), and is serving as one of the first ALAEQ councilors. His main research interests are identification, synthesis, biosynthesis, and field evaluation of insect pheromones and other semiochemicals, including coleopterans, lepidopterans and heteropterans.
Dr. Baldwyn Torto is currently the Head of the Behavioural & Chemical Ecology Department at the International Centre of Insect Physiology & Ecology (ICIPE - African Insect Science for Food and Health), Nairobi, Kenya. He studied Chemistry at the University of Ghana, and received his Ph.D. in 1988. From 1989 – 1991 he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, USA, and thereafter worked as a Scientist at ICIPE for 10 years. In 2000, he was a Rothamsted International Fellow at Rothamsted Research, United Kingdom, and from 2001- 2006, he was a Visiting Research Chemist at the United States Department of Agriculture/ Agricultural Research Service, Centre for Medical, Agricultural & Veterinary Entomology (CMAVE), Gainesville, Florida. He rejoined ICIPE in 2007 in his current position as a Principal Scientist. Dr. Torto’s research interests for the past 20 years have involved the chemical ecology of a wide range of insects that include locusts, stem borers, mosquitoes, bee pests, and various beneficial insects. 
Dr. Ylva Hillbur is Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Plant Protection Biology, SLU, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden (since 2007). She studied biology at Lund University, and received her Ph.D. from SLU (2001). Her research deals with gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) sex pheromones and applications for pest management. Since 2003, she has collaborated with colleagues at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, in a project focusing on sustainable control by semiochemicals of a major scarab beetle pest of sorghum, Pachnoda interrupta . The project has involved the establishment of a chemical ecology lab at AAU. Her research within the SLU-based research program IC-E3 (http://ice3.se) deals with host shift induced speciation in gall midges. 
Dr. Jan Bergmann is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Chemistry, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile. He studied Chemistry at the Universities of Kiel and Hamburg, Germany, and received his Ph.D. in 2002. From 2002-2004, he was a postdoctoral researcher at GKSS Research Center in Geesthacht, Germany, before accepting an Assistant Professor position at his current institute. Dr. Bergmann’s main research interest is the identification and synthesis of insect pheromones. Last year, he was appointed president of the newly-founded Latin American Association of Chemical Ecology.
Dr. Tetsu Ando is currently Professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT). He studied Agricultural Chemistry at the Graduate School of The University of Tokyo, and received his Ph. D. in 1978. He was an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Protection, TUAT, from 1981-1995 and, in 1995, he accepted the position of Professor of the Chemical Ecology Laboratory in the Graduate School of Bio-applications and Systems Engineering. His main research interest is the identification and synthesis of insect pheromones, particularly lepidopterous sex pheromones. He has been a member of the JCE editorial board since 2004, and a Councilor of the Asia-Pacific Association of Chemical Ecology since 2007.
